Associate of Science Degree in Veterinary Technology
ObjectivesThe Veterinary Technician is a vital member of the veterinary health care team. Technicians perform a wide variety of tasks in the veterinary field. The tasks may include obtaining samples for diagnostic testing; performing diagnostic tests in a laboratory environment for use in the prevention, treatment, and diagnosis of diseases in animals; preparing vaccines and serums for the prevention of diseases; providing nursing care to patients; taking diagnostic radiographs; assisting with anesthesia; preparing instruments, supplies, and patients for surgery; and client education.
Course descriptionGraduates of this program are eligible for entry level positions in large and small animal veterinary practices, veterinary hospitals, humane societies, animal shelters and animal research facilities.
Externship
The unpaid externship is undertaken following the successful completion of all classroom training. Students work in a veterinary clinic or hospital. During the externship the student is allowed to perform the skills taught during the classroom portion of the training.
