Bachelor in Chemistry

  • Objectives The Davidson College Department of Chemistry takes seriously its mission to provide an exceptionally rich learning environment in which to study chemistry. All courses are taught and all research is planned and facilitated by faculty members who are generous with their time and knowledge. Students can expect individual attention—promoted through small lecture and lab classes and by professors committed to interacting with students one-on-one and in small groups—as a hallmark of the department.
  • Course description As a natural science, chemistry is solidly within the realm of the liberal arts. Davidson College offers an exceptional learning environment in which to study this field.   All chemistry courses and research studies are planned, taught, and facilitated by faculty members with a commitment to teaching and interacting with students. The small lecture and lab classes (usually 8-16 students) foster plenty of interaction with professors who are generous with their time and knowledge and enjoy engaging students through small-group and one-on-one discussions.

Chemistry students have the opportunity through faculty-student research projects to experience the process of discovery, to master new techniques, and to gain an in-depth understanding of specific chemical problems.   Professors not only provide students with hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment, but also become trusted advisers offering guidance about academic programs and career paths.   All department offices and research labs are in close proximity to the spaces where chemistry students learn, study, compute, perform research, and socialize every day.

The Chemistry Department occupies the four-story, 23,000-square foot Martin Chemical Laboratory, which underwent a $1.5 million renovation in 1997 and is tenatively scheduled for further renovation and an addition in the next several years.

The building houses teaching and research laboratories, dedicated instrument rooms, a technology-equipped lecture hall and classroom, a chemical library with web access to hundreds of journals, and a computer lab.  A well-equipped laser lab is shared with the Physics Department.
