Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Languages and Literatures - Russian Studies

  • Course description The study of foreign languages makes possible communication among peoples of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds and fosters intercultural understanding. Since language is the primary means by which cultural perspectives are expressed and social interactions are shared, students of foreign languages and literatures are able to develop cultural insights, linguistic and literary sensitivity, and an awareness of other peoples’ world views that are not available in any other way. Through knowledge of another linguistic system and appreciation of the interdependence of language and culture, speakers of foreign languages are also able to view their native language and culture objectively and to allow that understanding to inform their communication with people from other cultures.

    CONCENTRATION: RUSSIAN STUDIES


    This concentration requires the choice of one of the following options: Language and Literature, Period Studies, Area Studies, Linguistics. Students must see their advisor to choose one of these options.

    MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
    Twelve credits in RUSS electives at the 200-level and above. 12
    Twelve credits in RUSS literature at the 300 or 400-level (at least six credits must be at the 400-level) 12 FLLT 327 Topics: Russian Literature in Translation 3 FLLT 375 Topics: Russian and Soviet Culture in Translation 3
    A three-credit capstone experience: RUSS 4xx capstone if available, FLLT 490 , or FLLT 495 (Senior thesis or equivalent fulfills the capstone requirement) 3 A total of six credits at the 200-level or above, chosen with prior approval of the advisor and according to option requirements, from the following areas: 6 Russian, Art History, Comparative Literature, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, History, Linguistics, Music, Political Science.

    Electives
    After required courses are completed, sufficient elective credits must be taken to meet the minimum credit requirement for the degree.
