The professional education sequence at CCS integrates best practice education standards for teacher preparation throughout the program's coursework,
field work and
service learning components.
All students must take
required core Liberal Arts courses in English, Art History, Social Science, Natural Science, Philosophy and Math. State of Michigan standards for Entry Level Art teacher preparation are woven throughout the rigorous studio and education courses that emphasize community involvement, hands-on field experience, and involvement with local arts and education organizations.
Art Education studio requirement courses include: Ceramics, Fiber Arts, Jewelry Making, Painting, and Printmaking courses. Computer Graphics and Figure Drawing are CCS Foundations requirements.
Post-degree students must take three additional hours in a studio outside of their BFA major – these usually are fulfilled by Art Education studio requirements.
CCS Art Education students will be prepared to design and deliver age appropriate K-12 visual art and design curricula that address the needs of a rapidly evolving technologically based society, as well as understand the underpinnings of visual art as a corner stone in the American education system.
