Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design

  • Course description Fashion reflects the political mood, economic conditions, technical achievements, aesthetic standards, and social milieu of a given culture. As a profession, fashion includes design, engineering, production, merchandising, advertising and marketing. The foundation for a successful career in fashion is the integration of all these elements.  Students who successfully complete the Fashion Design program at Columbia College Chicago will be able to demonstrate conceptual, critical thinking, and communications skills, and have the foundation necessary to enter fashion-related industries.

The primary objective at Columbia College Chicago is to educate and prepare students for a creative vocation in the arts. The goal of the Fashion Design program curriculum is to offer students the foundation from which to grow as an artist and a sculptor, and to acquire the skills related to the art and profession. Fashion students’ talents, interests, and potential are all encouraged and realized. The program teaches students to apply creative concepts of the artist/designer to the operation and organization of the clothing industry as it relates to their artistic focus.

The program stresses both theory and practical experience in order to illustrate the aesthetic, technical, and professional, and is rooted in social and historical aspects of Fashion Design. Skills taught in the classroom are applied to stimulating projects that lead towards a fulfilling, hands-on educational experience. The curriculum is kept current and reflects the new directions and technologies in fashion.
Columbia’s Fashion Design faculty is composed of professionals working in their area of expertise, thus bringing real world knowledge and practices to the classroom.
