Bachelor of Science in Occupational Safety and Environmental Health

  • Course description The Occupational Safety & Environmental Health (OSEH) program is designed for people interested in professions in safety, health, and environmental fields. Career opportunities are endless. General education courses are used to develop basic science knowledge while the major courses focus on the application of science in the technical and managerial aspects of safety and environmental health. A full semester internship opportunity is provided as a required part of the program.

A Bachelor of Science degree in OSEH provides an entry point into a profession that focuses on improving the environment of workers. OSEH graduates work to protect workers and the general public from injury and illness; a challenging and rewarding task in today's age of technological advancement.

The 120 credit B.S. degree in OSEH provides preparation in accident prevention, industrial hygiene, fire protection, hearing conservation, ergonomics, indoor air quality and safety engineering. Coursework in the physical and social sciences provides a basis for the technical and management studies in occupational safety, environmental health and industrial hygiene. Students use state-of-the-art equipment, instruments and procedures to perform professional duties and to provide leadership to conserve life, health and property.

The OSEH program at Millersville University is highly respected locally, regionally, and nationally. The OSEH program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

The OSEH program at Millersville University is multi-disciplinary applied science program, providing students with relevant exposure to the basic sciences and behavioral science subjects as well as thorough coverage of occupational safety, fire protection, environmental and industrial hygiene, and safety management. Students use state-of-the-art equipment, instruments and procedures to perform professional safety and hygiene duties and to provide leadership to conserve life, health and property.

All students complete the degree requirements with a one-semester supervised internship in their senior year. The internship program provides students with field experience in the practice of occupational safety and environmental health. Internship placements are coordinated through the OSEH program and include, manufacturing, construction, service, consulting, labor and government organizations. Internship locations are selected to match the strengths and interests of the students whenever possible. And, although completion of the internship is a graduation requirement, most internships are paid.
