  • Course description The FSU School of Library & Information Studies Certificate in Leadership and Management prepares librarians to be leaders and managers by enhancing their understanding of the unique challenges libraries face now and in the future. This certificate program offers training in leadership, management, policy, strategy development, decision-making, customer service, team building, negotiating, and budget and finance.

    Leadership and Management Certificate Requirements

    Take a total of 12 credit hours from the following courses. After you are admitted, a faculty advisor will be assigned to help you identify the four courses that will facilitate achieving your goals. No other courses may be substituted for any of the courses listed below.
    • LIS 5403 Human Resources Management (3 credits)
    • LIS 5408 Management of Information Organization (3 credits)
    • LIS 5411 Introduction to Information Policy (3 credits)
    • LIS 5426 Planning, Evaluation, & Financial Management (3 credits)
    • LIS 5442 Information Leadership (3 credits)
    • LIS 5487 Information Systems Management (3 credits)
    • LIS 5900r/5916r Directed Individual Study (3 credits) (Topic must be approved by your faculty advisor)
    • LIS 5945 Internship(Internship plan must be approved by your faculty advisor)
    Note: Given the goal of this certificate, we recommend completing an internship for any student who has not had direct experience in a leadership or management position. Furthermore, we encourage students to choose a site supervisor who will maintain frequent interaction and one-on-one mentoring as part of the internship experience.
    Requirements for Admission and Award of a Leadership and Management Certificate

    Non-Degree students must:
    • Have earned a Bachelor degree prior to admission;
    • Apply and be admitted as a “ special student ” (i.e., non-degree) to the University;
    • Submit a completed Application for Certificate to the School of Library & Information Studies; and
    • Request an official transcript to be sent directly to the School of Library & Information Studies, in addition to the one(s) required by the University for admission.
    Note: Non-degree students do not need to take a standardized test (e.g., GRE) for admission into a certificate program. If a student decides later to apply for admission as a degree-seeking student, GRE score will be required at that time.

    To receive the Leadership and Management certificate, students must:
    • Complete 12-credit hours of course work (four courses) from the approved list of courses, and
    • Earn a B or higher in each of the four courses taken for credit. (This is a higher standard of academic performance per course than required for the degree.)
