  • Course description
    The NYSID Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Sustainable Interior Environments is a one-year post-professional program focused on specialized knowledge, thinking, and skills, structured to prepare design professionals to assume leadership roles in developing and maintaining sustainable interior spaces that will positively impact the world. The curriculum provides rigorous professional education in the area of sustainable design focused on the interior environment, exposing students to a range of topics, research methods, integrated design development methodologies, and sustainable project management practices. Course work addresses the history and theory of sustainability, principles of sustainable materials, natural and artificial lighting and control systems, and integrated environmental systems design and indoor air quality as well as green textiles, furnishings, and decorative elements. The program includes two major studios designed to integrate acquired knowledge and research while exploring both residential and nonresidential environments, and prepares graduates to achieve LEED AP Certification.

    The 30-credit MPS requires completion in one year and is structured to accommodate working professionals by offering all classes in the evening and on weekends. It begins with 6 credits of foundation studies in the 8-week summer session, followed by two 12-credit 15-week semesters composed of lecture, seminar, and studio formats. All of the 30 credits required for the MPS degree must be taken at NYSID. 
     
    Admission to the MPS in Sustainable Design of the Interior program requires formal acceptance and a first-professional degree in interior design, architecture, or a closely related field, and submission of a portfolio demonstrating the applicant’s professional–level education and experience.
