Master of Urban Planning
-
Course description
The Master of Urban Planning is the
normal academic qualification for those
entering the planning profession. KU’s
program is accredited by the Planning
Accreditation Board. Strong emphasis
is placed on policy planning and analysis
in urban or urbanizing environments.
Students take foundation courses in
history, theory, and quantitative methods.
They also specialize in a planning area
of their choice: environmental planning,
housing and development planning,
land use planning and urban design,
or transportation planning.
A Master of Urban Planning degree
opens doors to careers in environmental
conservation, housing, economic development,
historic preservation, land use,
transportation planning, real estate development,
and many other areas. State, city,
and local governments as well as profit
and nonprofit agencies employ planners.
There are planning jobs in such areas
as health care delivery, criminal justice,
education, public finance, public policy
and management, law, negotiation,
infrastructure planning, and consulting.
A solid undergraduate education in
almost any discipline is good preparation
for the M.U.P. program. Some common
undergraduate majors are environmental
studies, political science, geography,
business, architecture, sociology,
economics, engineering, philosophy,
and history. Admission ordinarily requires
a bachelor’s degree and a grade-point
average of approximately 3.0 from KU
or another institution with substantially
equivalent bachelor’s degree requirements.
