The Medical Assistant Certificate of Completion Program prepares students with the business and clinical skills necessary to gain employment as a Medical Assistant, rendering one-on-one patient services.
This fully accredited program provides the mechanism for graduates to take the National Board Examination to become a nationally
Certified Medical Assistant. Emphasis is placed on both front office and back office.
Front office includes: patient relations, medical insurance, finances, coding, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, interpersonal communication skills, administrative procedures, skill development in computer usage and transcription. Back office includes clinical skills such as: medical and surgical asepsis, charting, patient prep, procedure set-ups, prioritizing, medication calculation and administration, EKG, diagnostic imaging theory, and lab skills that include: hematology, urinalysis, basic microbiology, phlebotomy.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course of study in the
Medical Assistant Program students should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and competency of medical front office administrative skills, including electronic record keeping, clerical aspects, insurance, communication, risk management, ethical issues, and inventory management.
- Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, patho-physiology, necessary verbal and written communication with physicians, peers, other healthcare workers, and patients as would be necessary in any type of ambulatory care setting.
- Demonstrate knowledge of psychological basics underlying personal and patient needs self-growth and personal development.
- Possess clinical skills, knowledge and competency performance, including fundamental medical asepsis principals, patient care, specimen collection, and diagnostic testing according to State and Federal mandates, quality control documentation and equipment maintenance as would be expected in any type of ambulatory care setting.
- Demonstrate knowledge of job readiness with resume building, interviewing skills, and complete competency in all basic medical assisting skills by successfully completing an externship.
- Demonstrate knowledge of State, Federal and AAMA regulations in regards to credentialing and certification.
Steps To Success
The SVI Medical Assistant program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) on recommendation of the Curriculum Review Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants Endowments (AAMAE).

This program was designed in collaboration with local health care providers to train potential employees for positions in ambulatory settings, clinics and offices. The student is cross-trained in multiple clinical and laboratory procedures, ensuring maximum flexibility during employment. Medical Assistants are in high demand.
Admission Policy
To enter the Medical Assistant Program you must have passed the Career Programs Assessment Test (CPAt) at the appropriate level. In addition a high school diploma or GED documentation is required. If you do not have either, you must complete your GED before entering the fourth quarter. You may register at SVI for GED classes.
Due to the nature of the clock hour program, the Medical Assistant Program does not allow for Advanced Placement, Transfer of Clock Hours and/or Credit from another school and does not recognize prior and/or experiential learning for credit. This is a Veterans Administration (VA) approved program.
