HISTORY
Chartered by the Mississippi Legislature in 1844, The University of Mississippi opened its doors to 80 students in 1848.

ENROLLMENT
Total enrollment on all of The University of Mississippi’s campuses, including The University of Mississippi Medical Center, is 18,344. Seventy percent of all students are from Mississippi, and 20 percent of students are minorities.

LIBRARIES
The University of Mississippi libraries house nearly 1.9 million volumes and more than 231,703 current periodicals and serial subscriptions. They also provide access to more than 140 electronic databases and more than 88,419 electronic journals. The J.D. Williams (main) Library boasts several noteworthy features: the Hall of Mississippi Writers, William Faulkner Room, James Meredith’s papers, world-renowned Music/Blues Archive and the national library of the accountancy profession.

TECHNOLOGY
Web-based services provide instant, 24/7 access to vital information, enabling students to apply for admission, register for classes, check grades, pay bills and submit class assignments online. Students and faculty have access to millions of library materials via the Internet. Each residence hall room includes a direct connection to the campus network as well as wireless service, and many public areas on campus provide wireless service.

RESEARCH
Research at The University of Mississippi is transforming what we know and how we do things in the areas of health, education, safety, and culture. The faculty and staff of the main campus in Oxford and The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson garnered $144 million to support 527 externally funded projects in the 2009 fiscal year. These research, service, and education projects are aimed at improving the quality of life of our citizens.

FACULTY AND STAFF
With 2,503 full-time employees on the Oxford and satellite campuses, including 729 full-time faculty, Ole Miss is the largest employer in Lafayette County. More than 82 percent of full-time faculty hold the highest degrees in their fields. The student-to-faculty ratio is 17:1.

STUDENT HOUSING
Ole Miss has ten traditional residence halls, two residential colleges and three apartment complexes that house a total of 4,386 students. A limited number of apartments is available for upperclass and graduate students. Additional student housing is provided by the various sorority and fraternity organizations under the dean of students’ Office of Greek Life.

ATHLETICS
With a long and storied history in intercollegiate athletics, the university competes at the highest level in 18 men’s and women’s sports. During the 2008-2009 season, nine teams reached postseason play. Baseball and men’s tennis captured SEC championships, and football won the 2009 and 2010 AT&T Cotton Bowls. Student athletes also earned eight national academic honors and 11 All-America recognitions, and 118 made the SEC Academic Honor Roll and 34 were named All-SEC.

ALUMNI
Nearly 150,000 living Ole Miss alumni and friends represent every state in the nation and 88 foreign countries. The University awards more than 3,300 degrees annually; more than 150,000 degrees have been awarded during its 162-year history. In 2008, the Alumni Association completed expansion of The Inn at Ole Miss, which includes 145 guest rooms and approximately 10,000 square feet of meeting space.

MEDICAL CENTER
The health sciences campus in Jackson houses schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Related Professions, Dentistry and Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences; the University Hospitals and Health System; and the Rowland Medical Library. The Medical Center employs 8,500 people, including more than 900 faculty. UMMC is the second-largest employer in the state of Mississippi.

Mission
The University of Mississippi is a public, comprehensive, research institution that exists to enhance the educational, economic, healthcare, social and cultural foundations of the state, region, and nation. As the oldest public institution of higher learning in the state and as a Carnegie Research University (high research activity), the institution’s primary functions are the creation, dissemination, and application of knowledge through a variety of undergraduate, graduate and professional programs and public service activities. The University's main campus at Oxford emphasizes a traditional, residential educational experience, with a central College of Liberal Arts and professional schools of Accountancy, Applied Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Law, and Pharmacy. Through its breadth of academic and research programs and its strong liberal arts tradition, the Oxford campus serves the educational needs of the entire state and also attracts a high percentage of out-of-state students. The University's regional campuses in Tupelo and Southaven emphasize professional offerings and serve adult and traditional learners in North Mississippi. The University Medical Center in Jackson includes the University Hospitals and Clinics as well as Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Related Professions, Dentistry, and Graduate Studies.
