The Bachelor of Science in Health Fitness Specialist degree program
The four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Health Fitness Specialist degree is offered at three Utah Career College campus locations: West Jordan (15 miles south of Salt Lake City Center), Orem and Layton. The program will provide you with skills and knowledge necessary to gain entry-level to intermediate-level employment in the health, wellness, and fitness industry, to own or manage a fitness center or gym, or to become a successful independent personal trainer (see Personal Trainer Qualifications) or fitness consultant.
Health and exercise science courses emphasize practical applications and industry experience. You will study exercise program design, nutrition, biomechanics and sport psychology, as well as management and marketing in the health and exercise industry. At graduation, you will be prepared to sit for national certification exams. In your externship, you will have the opportunity to apply your new skills and gain experience with an industry employer.
When you have earned your bachelor’s degree, you will be ready to begin a career in health and exercise science, working with a variety of clients in settings that might include health clubs, wellness centers, recreation departments, equipment and supplement providers, clinics and schools.
Complete a “four-year degree” in three years or less
If you attend full-time, you can complete the bachelor's in health fitness specialist degree program in 12 quarters (three years). The program includes core technical and occupational courses as well as general education courses. The general education courses and some core requirements are offered as online courses, providing an added degree of flexibility.
All coursework from the Associate in Health Fitness Specialist degree program transfers smoothly to the bachelor’s degree program. A common career path involves completing the associate degree first, getting into the workforce, and adding the bachelor’s degree credential for further advancement.
